Religious Instruction

Queensland state schools recognise and respect the diverse range of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs represented within their school communities. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are required to facilitate Religious Instruction (RI) when a recognised faith group approaches the school to provide RI and students of that faith are enrolled at the school.

Religious Instruction provides students with an opportunity to learn about the beliefs, values and practices of a particular religion. RI is delivered by approved volunteers from the relevant faith group using instructional materials endorsed by that group. All RI programs must comply with relevant legislation and Department of Education policies and procedures.

All RI instructors are required to hold a current Blue Card and complete the Department’s compulsory Student Protection and Code of Conduct training. RI instructors are authorised to deliver only the approved RI program outlined below. A member of school staff will be present while RI is being delivered.

Participation in Religious Instruction is not compulsory. Students, with the exception of Prep students, may participate in RI where a parent/carer has provided written consent to the school.

Students are allocated to RI based on the information provided by parents/carers on the completed Application for student enrolment, or via QParents Consent unless the school receives alternative written instructions.

Please note: Parent/carer consent remains in effect unless the school is advised otherwise in writing.

You may also wish to access the Department's RI policy statement for further information.  The school will advise parents of child/ren participating in these programs if a faith group requires funds to cover the expense of materials used in RI.
